ANDOVER, MA, Feb 20, 2024 – Standard Finishing Systems, a leading supplier of post-press and paper handling solutions, recently announced that Graphiscan, a printing, direct mail, and graphic communication company with three locations in and around Montreal, Quebec, has purchased new book binding equipment manufactured by Standard partner Horizon International Inc. The book binding solution, installed by Standard Horizon dealer RM Machinery, includes the Horizon LBF-500 Book Block Feeder, BQ-500 Perfect Binder, GF-500 Gauze Feeder, and HT-1000V Three-Knife Trimmer. Horizon’s cloud-based iCE LiNK platform is integrated across the entire system for operational efficiency.

The new Horizon line, which replaces an older Horizon perfect binding and trimming solution, will add greater capacity and throughput to Graphiscan’s operations with the BQ-500 able to process up to 800 books per hour. The company will now also be able to handle both softcover book production and hardcover book preparation with the same system. Depending on the type of finished book required, gauze application can be turned on or off via the user-friendly touchscreen on the GF-500 for easy changeover.

“Our business is expanding, and as we look to ramp up our case binding production, this solution is a perfect fit for our current job mix”, says Denis Gagnon, President at Graphiscan. “The system can easily switch between fully automated softcover production, which is still the majority of our work, and book block preparation for case binding when required, enabling us to offer our customers a wider range of capabilities and quicker turnaround. Standard Horizon has been a longstanding and reliable partner, so the decision to work with them on this upgrade project was an easy one.”

This new equipment joins a host of other Horizon solutions across Graphiscan’s multiple facilities, including two Horizon saddlestitchers with collating towers, an automated folder, and multi-function creaser/folder unit.
